In the early 2000s, a handful of visionary bands sculpted a form of heavy metal that blended its crushing intensity with the sprawling vastness of post-rock. This hybrid style provides musicians with an unbounded canvas, one where every stroke is painted in deep, muted tones. The traditional rules of structure, melody, and texture dissolve, as long as the music drifts into shadowy, introspective realms. Any sense of triumph feels hard-won, emerging not from the music itself but in defiance of its inherent weight.

Over the years, post-metal has become a well-defined genre, and Jettisunn, a rising force from Houghton, Michigan, is making its presence known. Their latest release, EVERYTHING/EVERYWHERE, builds upon the foundation laid by their 2023 debut EP, Finding Peace in Panic, expanding their sonic identity. The murky atmospheres and vast compositions remain, but this time, the guitars hit heavier, coated in even more distortion and grit.

Across the EP’s three expansive tracks, Trevor Mills’ basslines either pulse with hypnotic repetition or subtly shift within a tight framework, setting the stage for Kev Niemela’s guitar work to construct layers of both harmony and tension. Niemela masterfully interweaves sustained notes with massive, crushing chords, creating an intricate balance between melody and dissonance. This stripped-down, almost ritualistic approach to composition generates a brooding sense of unease, immersing the listener in a soundscape that feels both unshakable and deeply atmospheric.

The evolving textures throughout the record are most striking on “Monolith”, which gradually rises from sparse, understated percussion into a throbbing storm of relentless drumming. While the EP maintains a consistent, enveloping mood, a touch more variation could enhance its impact. Yet, Jettisunn’s minimalist approach is part of its strength, creating a listening experience that is hypnotic and consuming—especially for those drawn to immersive, mood-driven soundscapes over conventional, riff-driven compositions.

EVERYTHING/EVERYWHERE showcases a clear refinement of the band’s artistic vision. The production is meticulous, the arrangements are deliberate, and the balance between shifting dynamics and track durations is expertly handled. Jettisunn’s ability to conjure such an immense, monolithic sound with just three members is remarkable. Their music is colossal but never suffocating, avoiding the common pitfall of post-metal becoming overly dense or exhausting. On stage, they are an undeniable force—so if they pass through your city, make sure to experience their intensity firsthand.
