Exploring the discography of Boston-based instrumental progressive rock/metal virtuoso Peter Karapatsas and his project, Sound the Sirens, one can discern a consistent ability to make intricate musicianship feel exhilarating and dynamic. With his latest release, Imaginary Gravity (set to drop on May 23, 2025), this tradition remains unbroken. Karapatsas skillfully maintains a firm grasp on melody and rhythm while simultaneously upholding the high technical benchmarks he has previously established.
For an album of this nature, collaborations often play a significant role, yet Karapatsas has shouldered the majority of the workload himself. The only exceptions are the mixing and mastering, which have been deftly handled by Arch Echo bassist Joe Calderone, and an electrifying guest appearance by fellow guitar maestro Marco Sfogli on one of the tracks.
“In Due Time” serves as an invigorating opener, bursting with infectious energy, and the momentum remains relentless with “Chronotrigger.” Although the drums are programmed, they resonate with a sharp, commanding presence, seamlessly complementing Karapatsas’ dynamic and crisp guitar work. The initially subdued “Autonomic” introduces an enticingly peculiar groove that never fully settles into predictability. As the composition expands and contracts, the listener is kept in a perpetual state of euphoric anticipation, oscillating between syncopated rhythms and mesmerizing guitar textures that almost verge on overwhelming.
Every segment of Imaginary Gravity exudes a palpable sense of playfulness, making it evident that the sheer joy of music creation remains a cornerstone of Sound the Sirens‘ craft. The songwriting feels even more refined and articulate here. While each track could undoubtedly stand alongside those of contemporaries within the prog sphere (pun intended), few possess the same infectious exuberance and passion as Karapatsas’ compositions. The album boasts a polished production quality, which, while potentially polarizing to some, perfectly complements the sonic landscape Sound the Sirens crafts.
Take “Hypnagogic,” for instance—an electrifying whirlwind of sound where frenetic pacing and intricate melodies blend seamlessly. The lead guitar lines are as expressive as any vocal performance, striking a balance between delicate harmonies and the weighty impact of heavier sections. Meanwhile, “Wander,” featuring Marco Sfogli, feels like the ideal soundtrack to an unexpected adventure, infusing an epic and whimsical essence into the album. Nostalgia and modernity intertwine effortlessly in this piece, creating a truly immersive listening experience.
Before long, the journey draws to a close, and “Anaxos” provides a satisfying conclusion, marrying infectious grooves with melodic finesse. If you crave progressive instrumental music infused with a sense of wonder, Imaginary Gravity will more than meet your expectations. Fluid, vibrant, and undeniably joyous, this album further solidifies Sound the Sirens’ dedication to creating evocative and melodically rich soundscapes.
