Robots in Love, hailing from Dunedin, New Zealand, defy easy categorization with their genre-defying sound. Led by vocalist Elenor Rayner, the band has spent years crafting a distinctive approach to modern darkwave and “electro-goth” music, seamlessly blending elements of EBM, industrial, minimal synth, and more. To pin them down to a single genre would not only do them a disservice but also fail to capture the depth of their artistic range.

Rayner’s voice is undeniably the anchor of their sound—a throat-grabbing force that holds everything together. At times ritualistic, at others desperate, but always magnetic, her vocal delivery is a raw emotional force that resonates deeply with the listener. With their new single “Crush,” the band offers an even more intimate glimpse into their sonic world, following up on their previous contribution, “The Sequel,” which was featured on the Progotronics 47 compilation. “Crush” expands on their already distinctive vision, offering an experience that is personal, haunting, and immersive.

The track’s rhythm section, led by Alex Burchell, sets a foundation of industrial beats and ritualistic patterns, complemented by eerie, atmospheric soundscapes that enhance Rayner’s compelling performance. The production and mastering are top-tier, ensuring that every subtle nuance is crystal-clear, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the track’s haunting atmosphere.

Opening with a grim, droning darkscape filled with ominous energy, “Crush” gradually transforms into an entrancing journey. Pulsating basslines and rapid kicks drive the track forward, while Rayner’s vocals bring a theatrical quality to the piece. The track swells and contracts, as if navigating through a sea of electronic pulses, creating an almost hypnotic experience. Her voice moves between soulful, ambient moments and sharp, complex vocal lines, adding texture to the track’s eerie and enigmatic atmosphere. The careful arrangement of sounds creates a sense of suspense and timelessness, as if trapped in an alternate dimension, punctuated by sudden motifs that continually draw the listener’s attention.

Modern dark music with electronic elements and majestic industrial vibes is having a strong insurgence around the world. Robots in Love is for sure a name with a special place between the forerunners of this non-movement, an uncharted yet often explored region of underground scene. Their unique qualities stand as a beacon for both listeners and new artists, giving an example of integrity and human, emotional artistry.
