Hungarian melodic death metal/metalcore quartet D\SCORD has dedicated years to refining their sound, culminating in the release of the “Phobia” EP in December 2023. Several tracks on this six-song compilation have undergone a lengthy gestation period, and the growth and development of the band are palpable within minutes of listening.
D\SCORD‘s unique blend of melodic death metal, power metal, and metalcore sets them apart, making it challenging to pigeonhole them into a specific genre. Throughout the EP’s six tracks, the listener is taken on a dynamic journey with constant genre shifts, offering a refreshing and unpredictable musical experience. While the initial impression of the album opener may not be immediate, the gradual introduction of more melodic death elements in subsequent tracks adds an exciting dimension to the overall listening experience.
In my own perspective, the EP truly comes into its own with the third track, aptly titled “Spectre,” reaching its full potential with the compelling intensity of “Thalassophobia.” Notably featured in the “Progstravaganza: Harmony in Complexity” compilation, this track showcases D\SCORD‘s mastery in seamlessly blending influences from power metal, metalcore, and 90s Swedish death metal, reminiscent of bands like In Flames and Dark Tranquility.
“Thalassophobia” stands out as a testament to the band’s musical prowess, with its infectious melody leaving a lasting impact after just a couple of listens. It effortlessly captures the essence of the 90s Swedish death metal school while adding a contemporary flair, making it a standout piece within the EP. The listener is likely to find themselves hooked on its mesmerizing tunes, humming along with the unforgettable melody.
