Single Review: DRIFTING SUN – The Old Man

Drifting Sun, the formidable UK progressive rock band, has once again graced the music scene with their latest single, “The Old Man.” Extracted from their highly anticipated album, “Veil,” set for release on March 18, 2024, this track offers a glimpse into the aural canvas that Drifting Sun is weaving. A striking addition to Prog Sphere‘s “Progstravaganza: Harmony in Complexity” compilation, “The Old Man” showcases the band’s commitment to crafting intricate, atmospheric compositions that linger in the mind long after the final notes have faded.

The lineup of Drifting Sun reads like a who’s who of progressive rock virtuosos. Jargon’s vocals add a layer of emotive depth, while Ralph Cardall’s expertise on guitars and mandolin weaves a rich musical tapestry. Pat Sanders, the songwriter behind both music and lyrics, takes the helm on keyboards, guiding the listener through the complex arrangements. John Jowitt’s bass and Fudge Smith’s drums provide a solid foundation, creating the perfect platform for the band’s dramatic, theatrical sound.

“The Old Man” opens with a haunting melody, setting the tone for a musical journey that is both introspective and evocative. The lyrics, penned by Pat Sanders, paint a vivid picture of an old man grappling with the passage of time. The imagery is powerful, with descriptions of pain, broken-heartedness, and a longing for days gone by. As the narrative unfolds, the listener is drawn into a world where reality and dreams coalesce through the metaphorical “dark veil” and “blind screen.”

The music mirrors the lyrical depth, with a dynamic arrangement that builds tension and releases it in carefully crafted waves. Ralph Cardall’s guitar work is a standout element, alternating between delicate passages and soaring solos. The interplay between Pat Sanders’ keyboards and the rhythm section of John Jowitt and Fudge Smith adds layers of complexity, creating an immersive sonic experience.

Drifting Sun‘s music has often been likened to progressive rock giants like Genesis and Jethro Tull, and “The Old Man” lives up to these comparisons. The track is a testament to the band’s ability to seamlessly blend elements of classic and modern progressive rock, creating a sound that pays homage to their influences while remaining distinctly their own.

The thematic exploration of time, mortality, and the intertwining of dreams and reality is a recurring motif in progressive rock, and Drifting Sun handles it with finesse in “The Old Man.” The juxtaposition of the old man’s reflections on a life well-lived and a young man’s contemplation of an uncertain future adds depth to the narrative, inviting listeners to reflect on their own journeys.

Crafted with mastery, “The Old Man” provides a sneak peek into the musical cosmos that Drifting Sun is poised to reveal with their forthcoming release, “Veil.” With its evocative lyrics, intricate musical arrangements, and stellar performances from each band member, this track solidifies Drifting Sun‘s place in the pantheon of progressive rock. As we await the full album release on March 18, 2024, “The Old Man” stands as a tantalizing preview of the sonic journey that lies ahead.
