Daniel Sirotski, the mastermind behind the Dutch progressive/technical death metal band Sea of Consciousness, embarked on his musical journey at a tender age. Enthralled by the diverse sounds of Destiny’s Child, Rage Against The Machine, A Tribe Called Quest, and Metallica, he discovered his passion for music. Armed with a guitar at age 13, Daniel began crafting his own musical realm, fueled by a desire to create songs that resonated with his emotions rather than conforming to established formulas.

A pivotal moment unfolded a decade ago when Daniel crossed paths with drummer Istvan Timmermans. This encounter marked the genesis of a formidable musical partnership that propelled Sea of Consciousness to new heights. Together, they began writing structured songs, defying genre boundaries and embracing a unique artistic identity.

    The Melodic Chapter – “Misconception”

The spotlight now shifts to the featured track on the “Progstravaganza: Harmony in Complexity” compilation, “Misconception.” A profound chapter drawn from Daniel’s personal experiences, the song delves into themes of betrayal, loss of identity, and the arduous journey towards self-reflection and redefined identity.

    Crafting Sonic Tales

Daniel pulls back the curtain on his creative process. Every resonant riff conceived finds a place in his mental vault, patiently waiting for its moment. Assembling these musical puzzle pieces, he meticulously structures each song, aiming to narrate a compelling story. The process spans over five years, with influences from various musical genres and invaluable contributions from band members, culminating in the recently released, self-titled album.

    The Symphony of Influences

In the realm of progressive metal, Daniel’s influences are as diverse as his musical palette. Ranging from old-school thrash metal a la Metallica to new-school black metal vibes from Dissection, THRON, and Negator, his musical journey weaves together a rich tapestry. His love for diverse genres transcends metal, with influences drawn from the rhythms of old-school East Coast hip-hop to the melodic grace of artists like Justin Timberlake.

    Navigating Challenges

The journey has not been without challenges. Sea of Consciousness faced the daunting task of finding and retaining the right band members. High professional standards and unwavering dedication meant a series of trials before the final lineup crystallized. Lead-guitarist Stefan Gerritsen and bass-player Jeroen Koorn became the missing pieces, allowing the band to move forward and record their debut album.

    A Glimpse into the Future

As the scene evolves, Daniel remains focused on creating impactful music. Engaged in his roles as a high school teacher and a parent, he admits to being less active in the Dutch metal scene. The primary goal remains simple — writing great music and delivering electrifying live performances.

    Echoes of Success

Reflecting on memorable moments, Daniel recounts the profound experience of recording Sea of Consciousness‘ first demo. Hearing his music come to life as envisioned sparked a two-day emotional release, marking a poignant milestone in his musical journey.

    Sonic Resilience – “Persistence”

Among his compositions, “Persistence” holds a special place in Daniel’s heart. Beyond the infectious riffs, the song encapsulates a reservoir of positive and empowering emotions. It serves as a sonic motivator, urging listeners to rise above challenges.

    Unveiling the Future

With the debut album released and the first live show behind them, Sea of Consciousness sets sail for new horizons. The plan involves frequent live performances and a low-key exploration of their next album. Having grinded for five years, the band now aims to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

    Compilation Triumph

Inclusion in a compilation signals a validation of hard work for Daniel. The experience is a testament to the acknowledgment and appreciation of Sea of Consciousness within the musical landscape.

    A Message to Audiences

For those discovering Sea of Consciousness through the compilation, Daniel shares a simple yet impactful message — listen to the album as a whole. Intended as a singular, cohesive story, the music invites listeners on a transformative journey.

    Quickfire Insights

In a quickfire round, Daniel dreams of collaborating with the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughn, expresses a passion for the drums, and cites Dissection‘s “Storm Of The Lights Bane” as his go-to album. Non-musical influences, including history, philosophy, and geopolitics, seep into his music.

    Closing Words

As the interview reaches its crescendo, Daniel leaves the audience with a poignant note. The debut album, a culmination of five years of dedication, is presented as a vessel of solace — a musical offering that he hopes will bring peace of mind to all who listen.

    Discover More

For those eager to explore Sea of Consciousness further, social media platforms and websites become the portals to the band’s sonic universe. From Apple Music and Deezer to SoundCloud, Spotify, and beyond, the audience is invited to delve into the immersive world crafted by Daniel and his bandmates.

The saga of Sea of Consciousness continues, with each note and riff adding a new chapter to their evolving musical narrative. Follow the band on Facebook, Bandcamp, and Instagram.
