In the ever-changing world of symphonic progressive rock, Barcelona-based band Regna has woven a thrilling masterpiece with their debut album, “Cinema.” Following their conceptual EP, “Meridian,” released in 2015, the band has embarked on a journey that showcases their musical evolution and prowess. “Cinema” is not merely an album; it’s a journey, a cinematic experience that unfolds with each track, leaving the listener enraptured by its emotive storytelling and musical finesse.

    The DNA Unveiled

Regna is not content with mere musical expression; they strive to expose the very DNA of their artistry through “Cinema.” This album is a sincere and concise representation of the band’s identity, a culmination of everything learned and honed during their live performances and their prior work in “Meridian.” While not explicitly a conceptual piece, “Cinema” boasts common thematic threads—fear, loneliness, and the yearning for emotional sanctuary, followed by its inevitable collapse. The band sets out to explore these themes with a vulnerability that resonates deeply, making each note a poignant brushstroke on the canvas of their musical narrative.

    Two Hemispheres, One Musical Arch

The brilliance of “Cinema” lies in its construction as a complete musical arch of two hemispheres. Each track is a chapter, contributing to the overarching narrative that unfolds across the album. The opening track, “Opening Credits,” serves as a prelude, a gateway into the symphonic world Regna is about to unveil. It’s a mere 58 seconds, but it sets the tone for the cinematic journey that follows.

The album then takes us through the pulsating rhythms and intricate melodies of “Return to…” and “Spyglass,” where the influences of American prog powerfully shine through. The band skillfully navigates through the old-world charm of ’70s melody in “Tangent,” a track that later proves to be a standout piece with its unique composition, as described by keyboardist Miquel Gonzalez.

    A Symphony of Influences

Regna‘s sound is a tapestry woven from a diverse range of influences. The album pays homage to the powerhouse approach of American prog, reminiscent of bands like Kansas and Spock’s Beard, while also embracing the refined search for melody characteristic of the ’70s. The somber and mournful atmospheres of the Scandinavian folk-inspired scene add another layer to their musical palette. Yet, what sets Regna apart is their ability to draw from these influences and distill them into a unique and personal sensitivity, creating a sound that is both genuine and forceful, with nostalgic undertones and a strong personality.

    Track by Track Exploration

“Dramatis Personae” serves as a brief interlude, a momentary pause before the epic unfolds. And epic it is, as “Accolade” takes the listener on a 20-minute sonic journey, a magnum opus that showcases Regna‘s ability to weave intricate musical tapestries. The composition is ambitious, demonstrating the band’s proficiency in crafting complex yet emotionally resonant pieces.

    Tangent: A Symphony of Obsession

The inclusion of “Tangent” on Prog Sphere‘s “Progstravaganza: Harmony in Complexity” digital compilation is a testament to the track’s uniqueness. Keyboardist Miquel Gonzales describes it as a piece with few musical motifs, constantly spinning and twisting—an embodiment of a stubborn idea converging into an obsession. The influence of US symphonic prog is palpable, yet Regna‘s imprint is unmistakable. “Tangent” stands as a testament to the band’s ability to push the boundaries of traditional prog writing styles and create something truly distinctive within their repertoire.

Regna‘s “Cinema” comes through a formidable debut. It is a testament to the band’s ambition and unyielding passion for their craft. The album’s thematic depth, musical complexity, and emotional resonance make it a captivating journey for listeners. “Cinema” is an immersive experience, a sonic trip that leaves an indelible mark on the listener’s soul. As the credits roll on this cinematic venture, one can’t help but be eager for the next installment in Regna‘s musical saga.
