Hungary-based art rock trio Altisonic’s (interview here) album Venturis has been a long time coming. Conceived in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, this 10-track release captures what the band calls their “essence.” Though steeped in elegiac, symphonic tones, the album bursts with moments of fiery rock energy framed by expansive arrangements—a rewarding listen for fans of progressive and symphonic rock.
One of the standout tracks, “Connected to Power,” showcases the band’s intricate and forceful approach. Starting with a gradual build, the song picks up pace with driving drums and chugging guitars, each band member’s sound distinct and impactful. Just over two minutes in, guitarist João Figueiredo (also handling vocal duties) lets loose with a blazing solo that could best be described as “face-melting.”
Tracks like “Comes with the Package” and “Wasted Battery” are spirited rock volleys, while “Ocean” hooks the listener with sly catchiness. “Who is a Good Boy?” stands out for its upbeat, feel-good vibe, complemented by an ’80s-inspired production that amplifies Altisonic’s sound to larger-than-life proportions. The brooding closing track, “Wear and Tear,” is another highlight, featuring a layered and sophisticated arrangement.
While the lyrics on Venturis occasionally feel overwrought, the music itself has a grand, epic quality with potential for mainstream appeal. Altisonic may not have created a “perfect” record, but with Venturis, they’ve delivered a richly crafted piece of art rock in under 40 minutes.
