Every Hour Kills, the Calgary, Alberta-based progressive metal/djent trio, has released their latest single “Acheron,” showcasing the blend of technical proficiency and dynamism. The rotating collective ensemble features the core talents of ex-Divinity/Enditol guitarist and producer Sacha Laskow, guitarist Taylor Gee, bassist Brent Stutsky (ex-Breach of Trust), and vocalist Jei Doublerice (Despite Exile, Abiogenesis). With “Acheron,” the band delivers a powerful, immersive experience.

    Instrumental Mastery and Production

From the very first note, “Acheron” makes a strong impression with its intricate guitar work and precision drumming. Sacha Laskow’s guitar riffs are both complex and melodic, weaving through the track with a finesse that demonstrates his experience and skill. The djent influence is clear, with tight, palm-muted chugs providing a rhythmic backbone that propels the song forward. Brent Stutsky’s bass lines add depth and weight, perfectly complementing the guitar and creating a rich, layered soundscape.

The production quality of “Acheron” is impeccable, with each instrument clearly defined and balanced. Laskow’s expertise as a producer shines through, as the mix allows for both the heavy, driving sections and the more melodic, atmospheric moments to coexist harmoniously. The seamless integration of electronic elements adds an additional layer of texture, enhancing the overall listening experience without overwhelming the core instrumentation.

    Vocal Performance

Jei Doublerice’s vocal performance on “Acheron” is nothing short of stellar. His ability to switch between guttural growls and soaring clean vocals adds a dynamic range that keeps the listener engaged throughout the track. Doublerice’s powerful delivery conveys the intensity and emotion embedded in the lyrics, making the song resonate on a deeper level.

    Composition and Structure

“Acheron” is a school example in progressive metal composition, showcasing a sophisticated understanding of song structure and dynamics. The track opens with an atmospheric intro that sets a haunting, anticipatory tone. As the guitars and drums kick in, the intensity ramps up, leading into a powerful verse that seamlessly transitions between heavy and melodic passages.

The chorus is particularly memorable, with its anthemic quality and infectious melody. The interplay between the harsh and clean vocals creates a captivating contrast, highlighting the song’s thematic duality.

    Overall Impact

“Acheron” by Every Hour Kills is a compelling and expertly crafted single that stands out in the progressive metal/djent landscape. The band’s ability to blend technical proficiency with emotional depth results in a track that is both intellectually stimulating and viscerally impactful. Each member’s contributions are integral to the song’s success, from Laskow’s intricate guitar work and production skills to Stutsky’s solid bass lines and Doublerice’s versatile vocal performance.

For fans of progressive metal and djent, “Acheron” is a must-listen. It encapsulates the essence of Every Hour Kills’ musical identity while pushing the boundaries of the genre. The single not only showcases the band’s technical abilities but also their capacity for storytelling and emotional expression.
