Inhalo‘s debut album “Sever” is an enchanting journey through the sphere of Dutch progressive rock. Released in 2022 under Construction Records, this 43-minute album showcases the talents of Fons Herder (vocals), Roy Willems (guitars), Peter Cats (bass guitar), and Pepijn Gros (drums), all seasoned musicians with notable backgrounds in bands like A Liquid Landscape, Ivy’s Dream, and The Heaven’s Devils.

Drawing comparisons to the likes of Riverside and Opeth, Inhalo crafts a sonic landscape characterized by alternative prog rock textures, heavy guitars, and brooding atmospheres. Each track unfolds like a chapter in a dark, yet mesmerizing tale, weaving together elements of introspection and intensity.

The album opens with “Omniscient Being,” a haunting piano-driven instrumental that sets the stage for the sonic journey ahead, enveloping listeners in its atmospheric embrace. From there, “Subterfuge” emerges with a dynamic energy, showcasing influences from Tool and Opeth, while “Sisyphean” captivates with its diverse sonic palette, ranging from powerful riffs to intricate melodies.

In tracks like “Pretenders,” the band demonstrates their ability to marry beautiful melodies with raw, sometimes unconventional guitar solos, courtesy of Willems. “Eventide” introduces the Hindi snare instrument, the sarangi, played by Vincent Swiersma, adding an exotic flair to the composition.

The album’s longest track, “Last Vestige,” serves as a highlight, offering a kaleidoscope of musical motifs that pay homage to bands like Porcupine Tree and The Pineapple Thief. The interplay between loud and soft passages creates a dynamic listening experience, inviting listeners to immerse themselves fully in the music.

Closing out the album is the title track, “Sever,” another instrumental piece that ventures into metal-like territory, leaving a lasting impression with its powerful soundscapes.

Overall, “Sever” is a promising debut from Inhalo, one that rewards repeated listens as its intricacies unfold. With its blend of atmospheric soundscapes, intricate musicianship, and evocative storytelling, this album is a must-listen for fans of progressive rock. Give “Sever” a spin and let its spellbinding melodies transport you to new musical horizons.

    9.0 Spellbinding
