Frekvent, the quartet hailing from Odense, Denmark, has unleashed their second EP, “Unbroken,” a compelling blend of heightened grunge and progressive rock that catapults them into the limelight of their genre. Released in June last year, this sophomore effort has proven to be a milestone for the band, showcasing their prowess and solidifying their position as a force to be reckoned with in the music scene of Denmark.

The EP kicks off with a bang, as “Illusion” immediately grabs the listener’s attention with a relentless onslaught of powerful riffs. Guitarists Niklas Skovbo Jespersen and Rasmus Søgaard Holm take center stage, accompanied by Jespersen’s commanding vocals. The rhythm section, comprised of Mikael Beyer Madsen on bass and Allan Nørskov Johansen on drums, forms a formidable foundation that propels the music forward with undeniable energy.

As “Unbroken” unfolds, it becomes evident that Frekvent is not content with sticking to a single musical formula. The experimentation and magnificence within the instrumentation become increasingly apparent, especially in tracks like “Between the Lines” and “Silhouette.” The lead guitar work in these songs exudes an everlasting beauty, while the underlining bass tones elevate the overall impact tenfold. The choruses, with Jespersen’s vocals at the forefront, add a layer of positive brightness that enhances the overall listening experience.

What sets “Unbroken” apart is its ability to offer a diverse range of musical experiences within each track. The album seamlessly transitions from modern metal guitar onslaughts to expansive prog metal landscapes, creating a journey where each song transports the listener to a distinct island within the musical universe crafted by Frekvent. The closing piece, “Words Unspoken,” stands out as a highlight on the record. The song, which is a part of the “Progstravaganza: Harmony in Complexity” compilation, eschews the need to be overly extravagant, instead opting for a more mainstream quality. The upbeat chord progressions, punctuated by the skillful guitar leads, contribute to a seamless flow that captivates the audience.

From start to finish, Frekvent delivers an impressive sonic palette, making their music undeniably likable. The EP serves as a musical smorgasbord, offering a variety of songs and sections that can even bring a tear of joy to the most stoic prog fans. While it may not claim the title of the “perfect” progressive record, “Unbroken” sets a high standard that challenges both emerging and veteran acts alike.

Frekvent‘s ability to seamlessly blend grunge and progressive rock elements showcases their musical versatility. The guitar-driven sound, coupled with Jespersen’s dynamic vocals, creates a sonic landscape that resonates with both intensity and beauty. The rhythm section’s tight cohesion provides a solid backbone, allowing the band to explore intricate musical territories with confidence.

“Unbroken” is a testament to Frekvent’s artistic evolution and their commitment to pushing boundaries within their genre. The EP not only cements their place in the progressive rock scene but also serves as a benchmark for aspiring bands. These four gentlemen from Odense have not only raised the bar for themselves but have set a standard that challenges even the most seasoned acts in the progressive music realm.

As the final notes of “Unbroken” fade away, it’s clear that Frekvent has crafted a musical journey that transcends the boundaries of their influences. The EP’s individuality lies not only in its diverse sonic landscapes but also in its ability to evoke a range of emotions from the listener. Frekvent has succeeded in creating an immersive experience, where each song is a chapter in a larger narrative, inviting the audience to explore the intricacies of their musical universe.

“Unbroken” is more than just a sophomore EP—it’s a statement of musical prowess and a testament to the band’s commitment to artistic exploration. Clocking in at just the right balance of grunge and progressive rock, this release showcases the band’s growth and sets a high standard for the future. As Frekvent continues to evolve, it’s exciting to imagine the musical terrains they’ll explore and the sonic adventures they’ll undertake in their future endeavors.
