Digital Carbs catapult listeners into a mesmerizing realm of sonic exploration with their sophomore EP, “Conform Deform,” an intoxicating odyssey that transcends the boundaries of indie, psych, and prog rock. Released on December 14, 2023, via Schaufel und Besen Records, this Munich-based quartet has crafted a musical tapestry that not only builds upon the foundations laid by their 2022 debut album “Are We Taking It Slowly” but propels them into uncharted territories of creativity and introspection.

The opening track, “Niche Documentaries,” sets the stage for the EP, establishing a distinctive sonic landscape that immediately captivates the audience. A riveting blend of disorienting grooves and dreamy guitars pulls you into a vortex of sound, guided by the intimate vocal prowess of Johannes Rest. The track’s inclusion in Prog Sphere‘s “Progstravaganza: Harmony in Complexity” compilation is a testament to its standout quality and the band’s ability to navigate the intricate labyrinth of progressive rock.

As the EP unfolds, the listener is taken on a dynamic journey through the remaining tracks: “Mr. Five,” “I’ve Heard You Talk With Diamonds,” and “In Unison.” Each song showcases the band’s evolution, revealing a more vivacious sound characterized by intricate arrangements and electrifying performances. The chemistry among the band members, consisting of Johannes Rest (vocals, bass), Konrad Diesch (drums), Gillian Höller (guitar), and Markus “Willy” Willmann (guitar), is palpable, resulting in a synergy that propels the music to new heights.

One of the most striking aspects of “Conform Deform” is the shift in lyrical focus. Digital Carbs move beyond the personal introspection of their debut album, delving into profound societal issues. Rather than casting blame on external forces, the band invites listeners to explore the intersection of personal struggles and the complexities of contemporary society. This thematic depth adds a layer of intellectual engagement to the EP, inviting listeners to ponder the intricacies of the human experience.

The production quality on “Conform Deform” is impeccable, allowing each instrument to shine while maintaining an atmospheric cohesion. The EP’s soundscapes are rich and immersive, creating an environment where listeners can lose themselves in the intricacies of Digital Carbs‘ sonic story.

“Conform Deform” is a triumph for Digital Carbs, showcasing their growth as musicians and storytellers. With disorienting grooves, dreamy guitars, intimate vocals, and thought-provoking lyrics, the EP invites listeners on a thrilling sonic journey. This release firmly establishes Digital Carbs as a force to be reckoned with in the prog rock scene, and “Conform Deform” is a must-listen for anyone seeking a transcendent musical experience.
