In the vast and ever-evolving realm of progressive metal, Tesseract‘s 2023 release, “War of Being,” stands as a commanding testament to the band’s musical prowess and their ability to navigate the intricate landscapes of the genre. With eight tracks that collectively span a diverse sonic spectrum, Tesseract delivers an album that is both technically impressive and emotionally resonant, solidifying their position as a frontrunner in the progressive metal scene.

The journey begins with “Natural Disaster,” a track that immediately sets the tone for the album. Clocking in at 6:07, it opens with an ethereal soundscape before launching into the signature blend of djent-inspired rhythms and atmospheric textures that Tesseract is renowned for. The intricate guitar work, complemented by Daniel Tompkins‘ emotive vocals, creates a captivating introduction that seamlessly transitions into the heart of the album.

“Echoes,” at 5:47, continues the sonic exploration with its pulsating rhythms and hypnotic melodies. The track is a showcase of Tesseract’s ability to balance technicality with accessibility, providing listeners with a complex yet engaging musical experience. The interplay between the instruments and Tompkins’ dynamic vocal range contribute to the track’s overall richness.

“The Grey,” spanning 6:08, introduces a darker and more introspective atmosphere. The song’s title is reflected in its sonic palette, with shades of melancholy woven into the intricate musical tapestry. The ebb and flow of intensity throughout the track keep the listener engaged, and the meticulous attention to detail in the production enhances the overall sonic experience.

“Legion,” at 6:00, emerges as a sonic powerhouse, featuring relentless riffs and a driving rhythm section. The track’s intensity is balanced by moments of melodic respite, showcasing Tesseract’s ability to create dynamic compositions that evolve naturally. The seamless transitions between sections contribute to the cohesiveness of the album.

“Tender,” a comparatively shorter track at 4:38, introduces a more subdued and contemplative mood. The restrained instrumentation and introspective lyrics provide a moment of reflection within the album’s larger narrative. This track serves as a testament to Tesseract’s versatility, demonstrating their ability to evoke emotion through both powerful dynamics and delicate nuances.

The title track, “War of Being,” unfolds over an expansive 11:03, serving as the centerpiece of the album. This epic composition showcases Tesseract’s ambitious songwriting, featuring intricate instrumental passages, atmospheric layers, and Tompkins’ evocative vocal delivery. The extended runtime allows the band to explore diverse musical landscapes, from moments of ethereal beauty to intense and cathartic climaxes.

“Sirens,” a 4:58 track, follows with a sense of urgency. The rhythmic complexity and pulsating energy maintain the album’s momentum. Tesseract’s ability to create infectious hooks within the context of progressive metal is evident, making “Sirens” a standout track that bridges technicality with accessibility.

“Burden,” at 6:35, introduces a sense of weight and gravity. The track’s title is reflected in its somber atmosphere and introspective lyrics. Tesseract’s masterful use of dynamics and their ability to convey emotion through their musicality are on full display, making “Burden” a poignant addition to the album.

The album concludes with “Sacrifice,” a sprawling composition that clocks in at 9:35. This final track serves as a fitting conclusion to the musical journey, revisiting and revising motifs from earlier in the album. The gradual build-up and cathartic release of tension create a sense of resolution, leaving the listener with a feeling of completeness.

In summary, “War of Being” by Tesseract is a monumental achievement in the realm of progressive metal. The album’s intricate compositions, technical brilliance, and emotional depth combine to create a sonic journey that captivates from start to finish. Tesseract’s ability to seamlessly blend complex rhythms, atmospheric textures, and emotive vocals sets them apart as trailblazers in the genre. “War of Being” is not just an album; it’s a sonic odyssey that invites listeners to explore the depths of progressive metal with a band at the height of their creative powers.
