Listen To Leprous’ New Single “Chronic” Taken From “Coal”

Leprous

Norwegian proggers Leprous put out a new single out, for the song “Chronic” taken from the band’s upcoming album called “Coal,” to be released on May 28 via InsideOut. Commenting on the song, the band says:

We’re delighted to finally be able to give you the first taste of our upcoming album Coal. It’s a melancholic, soulful and very dynamic album. Where Bilateral was playful and in-your face, Coal is subtle and floating. Chronic however, is of the more dynamic songs of the album. With a heavy basis, the songpinches a nerve Leprous has never before explored.

Listen to “Chronic” below.

LEPROUS: "Coal" To Be Released On May 20

Leprous have completed work on their fifth album, Coal, to be released on May 20 (May 28 in North America) via InsideOut.

And vocalist-heyboardist Einar Solberg describes the follow-up to 2011′s Bilateral as “more melancholic and darker.”

He explains: “By ‘darker’ I don’t mean more aggressive, but more severe. There’s still a big range in the dynamics, but no jumping between different moods within a song.

“I feel we are one step closer to a personal expression. Producers Heidi Solberg Tveitan and Vegard Tveitan, of Mnemosyne, helped us a lot with reaching the full potential of the songs.”

The Norwegians started work on Coal soon after their European Progressive Assault tour in October last year...

Ihsahn – Eremita

Regardless of where Ihsahn goes with his music, it’s doubtful subsequent albums will escape comparisons with his flagship work in the legendary Emperor.Although most musicians who choose to go to ‘solo’ route end up dwarfed by their younger selves, Ihsahn has continued evolving his sound, inching towards prog rock with each album. Many don’t share my enthusiasm with Ihsahn’s solo material, but his album trilogy of “The Adversary”, “Angl”, and “After” make up some of the fiercest progressive metal to come out in the past decade. In other words, I had big expectations for “Eremita”; an album I hoped would follow up on the streak of excellence...

Conor's Top 30 of 2011

So here it is, the end of 2011. It’s probably been the biggest music year of my life, at least in terms of listening to the work of others is concered. I’ve probably listened to about two or three hundred albums this year, and it was pretty difficult to pick out the best of the best. There was plenty of mediocre stuff I heard, but there are more than enough records that came out of 2011 that I’ll be taking with me well into 2012. For most of these albums, I have included a link to the review I originally wrote for it. I understand that what’s written in the reviews may not align with what I say here, but my opinions are fluid and have evolved over the course of the year...

David Lazar Galić (DRACONIC)

I turned 30 in 2011. Looking now at the albums I enjoyed most over the course of this year, and what made them enjoyable to me, it seems that the older I get, the more I just want to hear good songs.

If you don’t write songs that engage me and leave an impression on me after I have listened to them, if nothing motivates me to replay your album after I’ve finished listening to it – I don’t care about your scene cred, how many times you’ve change meter in a particular track, what pickups you’re using, your AxeFX presets, who produced your album, or any other superficial fact you throw my way.

Just give me something that’s honest, that reflects your influences in a sincere and unique way without trying to ride the coattails of any particular trend or manufactured movement – just gi...

ProgSphere’s AwesomeCast: Episode 08 – 2011 Year in Review – All About Prog

I know that I’ve become a bit boring by repeating how this year is one of the best in recent years when it comes to music, but I swear I have really strong evidence for my claim. To do so, I’ve come up with 100 albums, divided into 5 categories where each of the categories is backed up by an AwesomeCast. You get a special article together with a podcast with this one. Could you ask for more?

[mp3player width=590 height=130 config=fmp_jw_widget_config.xml playlist=awesomecast008.xml]

The honor of opening this series of podcasts is given to “All About Prog” – where the emphasis is progressive rock and metal albums which received very good reviews, but above all, the albums we liked. Thus, in this one you’ll find a mix ranging from prog fusion Accordo dei Contrari and Planeta Imagi...

Leprous – Bilateral

With much assurance I can say that Leprous is one of the most interesting bands in recent years. The avalanche that started after their not-quite-distinguishable-but-still-excellent debut Aeolia (released in 2006), pushed the band significantly forward after 2009’s Tall Poppy Syndrome, assigning this record as one of the top albums of the year. The band intrigued the progressive metal community after being a live support band for Ihsahn and a tour with Therion in 2010 just confirmed that something (wicked) big this way comes.

On the road to popularity, the band signed for InsideOut Music and everything was set for another gem in the running discography. With a title like Bilateral the band announced that this SOMETHING is going to be the most controversial, avant-garde, eclectic and abov...
