Machine Mass – Inti

Machine Mass - Inti

Though keeping the power trio setup but taking out the word “trio” from the band’s name, Machine Mass led by a Belgian guitarist Michel Delville released a new studio album on a NYC label MoonJune Records last month. After 2011′s As Real as Thinking, Inti continues the explorations, emphasizing the experimental side even more.

The sophomore album features renowned saxophonist and flutist Dave Liebman, who previously collaborated with the likes such Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Elvin Jones and Quest. Liebman substituted Jordi Gognard who accompanied Delville and drummer Tony Bianco previously on As Real as Thinking.

Masterfully crafted Inti pushes the creative envelope by assigning the talent and experience to the unit, stating it loud and clear that Machine Mass is not in the hands of one man, but rather a joint effort of the present individuals. Each one of them works as both a leader and a follower, and breaking down the song structures inevitably reveals the trio’s ever-lasting “on fire” moments. The highly improvised, soulful and spiritual sounds that echo on Inti generate the vigorous energy that interacts with timeless compositions of Davis, McLaughlin or Fripp.

Switching modes from song to song Machine Mass plays on diversity card with Inti, without hesitation to peek into the unknown. From the classic fusion led opener Inti, via intricate Centipede, over the take of DavisIn A Silent Way down to epic Elisabeth, the trio is after something unusual with this record. The formula of putting together ambient soundscapes with free improvisational passages resulted in a sixty minute journey through mysterious. A sixty-ton monster.
