ZAYN: Adrenaline Boost

Zayn live

Croatian noisemakers Zayn released their third album “Fields of God” in September, and are currently working on its follow-up. The band plans to hit the road in 2016, and about this all they tell us in the interview below.

Define the mission of Zayn.

Creating music that doesn’t leave you indifferent. Speaking the truth without any words.

Tell me about the creative process that informed your recently released album “Fields of God” and the theme this song captures.

Creative process starts with a lot of rehearsals until we hit that point of being a band, not individuals. After a few discussions, ideas and bad words everything gets to the point where we are satisfied with music and energy we want to produce.

The song Fields of God is a definite statement about world’s intellectual collapse which is present as a theme throughout the whole album. In other words People=Problems=Death.

What is the message you are trying to give with “Fields of God”?

It came to exist as an observation of our enviroment where depression and narrow minds enclose us. It is a way of presenting that depression, sadness and hope of overcoming boundaries. Loud agressive parts give you that adrenaline boost to push the anger out of your body. Some other parts can take you far away, because you know that life can be beautiful sometimes.

Fields of God

How did you document the music while it was being formulated?

Our music is only documented in our heads while it is being formulated.

Is the dynamic flow of the pieces carefully architected or is it an organic outgrowth of performing them together?

We mainly try to find the dynamic flow of pieces through performing the songs until we sense that we’re going in the right direction. It’s primarily organic outgrowth but there is always the architecture part after, which you have to be careful with.

Describe the approach to recording the album.

You could say that our approach is an analog one. We recorded it live, without any digital interventions. The sound which you hear on the album is as it was recorded through amps, from the beginning to the end.

How long “Fields of God” was in the making?

Let’s just say that Fields of God was with us the whole time (the band came to be in 2011.) but we weren’t ready for it. We had to get through some child diseases (member problem, equipment problem, focusing problem, etc…). The main thing was to understand that the only way to create something of quality is to develop and push ourselves musically and as individuals. Speaking of time, the album was created and recorded in 2014.. Mixing and mastering was entrusted to Tymon Kruidenier (ex-CYNIC, EXIVIOUS) and in the early 2015 it was done.

Which bands or artists influenced your work on the release?

This album is a mix of different influences whether you’ll take music, books or visual art. It’s hard for us to single out any of them because we as a band are always developing and there are a lot of bands and variety of genres we listen to.

What is your view on technology in music?

Even though we’re more analog sound oriented it would be a mistake to discard it because the technology in music is a whole new world of possibilities. The only thing is how you’re using it.

Do you see the band’s music as serving a purpose beyond music?

For us it surely does. In a way it’s our cosmos and a creative outlet. Also we take the music in general as an integrative component of our lives. To other music listeners… You should ask them.

What are your plans for the future?

We’re currently in the phase of creating new material for next album and planning a European tour for 2016. The only thing we’re always dedicated to is progress and further development of Zayn.
