WAYWARD DAWN: Darkness Dwellers
Skanderborg, Denmark-based death metal unit Wayward Dawn emerged in 2015, but the band has just launched their debut full-length release ‘Soil Organic Matter.’ In a new interview for Prog Sphere, the five-piece discussed their mission, the album, influences, and more.
Define the mission of Wayward Dawn.
Right now the mission for us is to get out and play as many gigs as possible and increase our fanbase. And of course drink beer and have fun!
Tell me about the creative process that informed your recent album Soil Organic Matter and the themes it captures.
When we wrote songs for the album it was a collective process in the rehearsal space. The idea of the album was created when we wrote the title song “Soil Organic Matter”. The themes on the album centers around a criticism of humanity and society with a nihilistic point of view.
What is the message you are trying to give with Soil Organic Matter?
There is definitely themes on the album, but we don’t have one specific message we are trying to push through.
How did you document the music while it was being formulated?
For the most part we remembered the songs in our head, and once we had all the songs for the album ready we made demos for them.
Is the dynamic flow of the pieces carefully architected?
When we wrote the songs we wrote them individually, and then afterwards we piece together which songs that fits best together.
Describe the approach to recording the album.
We recorded the basic tracks live at Dead Rat Studio in Aarhus, Denmark, and then afterwards we overdubbed the guitars, recorded the solos and lastly recorded vocals and backing vocals.
How long Soil Organic Matter was in the making?
About a year. We wrote the first song from the album two years ago, but the idea of Soil Organic Matter started about a year ago.
Which bands or artists influenced your work on the release?
We have many artists we are inspired by, but the biggest influences during our work on the release is probably Morbid Angel, Behemoth, Bloodbath, Gojira and Lamb of God.
What is your view on technology in music?
We like our sound to be raw and authentic.
Do you see your music as serving a purpose beyond music?
We like when people enjoy our music, but really we just want to play death metal and have a good time doing so.
What are your plans for the future?
Right now our plans for the future is to play as many concerts as possible both in Denmark and outside the country. Also, we have already begun writing on our next release.
