THE BOLIDE: Music Expression

The Bolide promo copy

Budapest, Hungary based one-man project The Bolide took part on our Progotronics XX compilation back in February 2020, and he answered our question about his mission with the project, songwriting, recording and more.

Define the mission of The Bolide.

The mission is simple: I want to create aggressive metal music combined with other electronic genres: D&B, Trap, Synthwave and so on. I’m really tired of listening to music which already exists and maybe it sounds cliche but I want to compose something unique and experimental.

Tell me about the creative process that informed your single “Limb Darkening.”

I’m really obsessed with cyberpunk and surreal culture. Right before the writing process I watched Akira and listened to glitchy trap music and basically that’s the fundamental inspiration of this single.

Is there a certain message you are trying to give with “Limb Darkening”?

As it is an instrumental song I want to convey feelings and vibes so this is a dark heavy electronic metal song. Nothing more, nothing less.

How did you document the music while it was being formulated?

I’m writing and recording in my DAW software. For a 4 minutes long song I’m recording 20 minutes of guitar/synth snippets what I can mix together. I’m changing parts back and forth to see what’s working or not. Few years back I used tabulature software (Guitar Pro) to create ideas first but in my opinion you cannot predict what’s going to be the outcome with this approach.

Describe your approach to recording.

I’m recording, mixing and mastering my music. For guitars I’m using an AX8 unit, for synths I’m using various softwares and my MPK mini midi keyboard. Rest of the instruments are also software based.

How long “Limb Darkening” was in the making?

I don’t like to spend weeks and months to create a song or album. I spent only 3 days to compose this song. If I have enough ideas and inspiration it’s not a problem to create songs in this pace.

Which bands or artists influenced your work on the single?

The Algorithm, one of my major influences. I really like his approach to music making and he’s a multi talented musician. I’m also getting inspirations from synthwave artists like Perturbator and Carpenter Brut. From the metal scene I would say Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya, Crystal Lake.

What is your view on technology in music?

I’m using mostly softwares to compose and I’m pretty satisfied how it’s evolving and changing. Couple of years ago it was almost impossible to record songs in high quality. Nowadays, with fairly cheap equipments you can make awesome songs. Now you need a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and inspiration. I really like this type of freedom!

Do you see your music as serving a purpose beyond music?

My music is a kind of expression and not utilitarian. It can make us feel “bigger than what we are”. I feel there’s a strong community behind the experimental artists what I really appreciate. I’m always getting useful feedbacks and I’m also lucky to already have a small but solid fan base.

What are your plans for the future?

I already released my second single called “BUOYANCY,” and I’m planning to release a third single in the near future.
