BELOW A SILENT SKY: Imaginary Stories

Below A Silent Sky

Instrumental post-rock/progressive metal quartet from Ilmenau in Germany, Below A Silent Sky released their debut album “Corrosion” this September. The band, who are part of the Prog Sphere PR family, answered our questions about their work.

Define the mission of Below a Silent Sky.

We create soundscapes and moods to invite the listener to open his mind for a journey through our music. Therefore each song should tell an open imaginary story without the use of words.

Tell me about the creative process that informed your album “Corrosion.”

The initial ideas came from the both guitarists inspired by daily experiences and moods.

During the rehearsals the new thoughts were jammed, criticized and developed further with the whole band. Piece by piece the material gets refined and becomes an entire composition.

What is the message you are trying to give with “Corrosion”?

Everything in our environmental sphere changes constantly under the influence of natural forces and the behavior and exploitation of mankind.

Below A Silent Sky - Corrosion

How did you document the music while it was being formulated?

After each rehearsal we record the new material to analyze it at home and find new ideas for the next sessions.

Is the dynamic flow of the pieces carefully architected or is it an organic outgrowth of performing them together?

It is a mixture of both. On one side, there are atmospheric and emotional parts which are the result of organic jams, on the other side there are clearly structured, harder and more powerful riffs.

Describe the approach to recording the album.

First step was to record a preproduction in our rehearsal room. Then we reviewed the songs of the album. Afterwards we started to do the first tracks by recording the drums in audiophile-studio Erfurt. Guitars and bass were partially recorded by reamping technique. Some important emotional parts were recorded live in the studio to preserve the feeling. Mixing, mastering and some additional cool effects were done by our producer sound engineer and good friend Philipp Schwetschenau.

How long “Corrosion” was in the making?

It took about one and a half years to write the songs and another 6 months to record them.

Which bands or artists influenced your work on the release?

The Ocean, AHAB, O’Brother.

What is your view on technology in music?

Every band has to find the right technology to create their own unique sound.

Do you see your music as serving a purpose beyond music?

The main purpose is having have fun while playing our music and to have a good time together. It’s a great pleasure to reach other people with our music and to see them enjoying it.

What are your plans for the future?

During the next years we want to play as many gigs as possible in Germany and Europe. Of course we will write new material to record another album in the future. It would be great to find a nice label which supports us with booking and promotion. But until this happens we will write many Emails, perform calls and get in touch with people and other Bands to enlarge our reach and expand our community.
