A FINE LINE: Determining Own Paths
Prog rock/metal band A Fine Line has recently launched their third EP ‘Separating Perception from Reality.’ We featured their single ‘The Big Maybe’ on Progotronics 16 compilation, and the band answered our questions about the release and more.
Define the mission of A Fine Line.
A Fine Line exists to be heard. We want to share our life experiences with anyone who can gain good things
from them.
Tell me about the creative process that informed your new EP “Separating Perception from Reality” and the themes it captures.
This is our second concept album. It’s becoming more clear to us that how we perceive our culture and industry as prog metal musicians versus the reality of what what it’s truly like to find our own way can tell two completely different stories. This album documents our growth and serves as a landmark for us to remember where we were when when put it together. We faced our fears in “Anything.” Reconciled our pasts with “The Voiceless.” Forgave ourselves with “the Big Maybe.” Prepared ourselves for what’s next with “We Burn,” and opened up to our loved ones with “No Way.”
What is the message you are trying to give with “Separating Perception from Reality”?
Use your own mind, eyes, ears, and heart to determine your own path.
How did you document the music while it was being formulated?
We constantly record our process in our home studios as well as record rehearsals.
Is the dynamic flow of the pieces carefully architected?
AFL has a mass diversity of listening tastes. From 70′s prog to 80′s pop to 90′s grunge to 2000′s metal, to emo, to djent, to bebop, to jazz, to soul, to r&b… each component collides happily into what we play. So while it was designed architecturally, the flow is more natural that cautious.
Describe the approach to recording the EP.
Oscar recorded guitar/drum/vocal scratch tracks and the rest of the band contributed recordings of their parts initially. From there, writing rehearsals caused the music to evolve into the rough draft form. From there it was solidified in the studio to become the final recorded product in River Bear Studios. (Who did a PHENOMENAL job!)
How long “Separating Perception from Reality” was in the making?
Separating from inception to execution took right around a year to complete.

What is your view on technology in music?
Technology is a helpful tool that facilitates great progress in music when not allowed to completely remove the human element.
Do you see your music as serving a purpose beyond music?
Our band holds tightly to the words “Hope Springs Eternal.” It’s our desire to share hope and challenge our listeners to live a life less ordinary.
What are your plans for the future?
We have material for three more albums already written. We want to record, play shows, share online, play more shows, record more music in a beautiful and hopefully life-lasting cycle!
