Little is known about the whereabouts of The Osiris Current, apart from their base in Ventura, California, and that their debut album One was released in September—what a journey it is.
On One, The Osiris Current choose a progressive stoner/doom style that’s as audacious as it is intricate, with a strong Middle Eastern influence woven throughout. The five-track album is an unfiltered, hard-hitting experience. Moments like “Touching the Void” see the female vocalist unleash a vocal force that, combined with shifting rhythms, is nothing short of powerhouse. There’s no better way to describe it. Middle Eastern-tinged melodies take the lead at various points in the album, making a striking impression. Even when The Osiris Current shift away from these prominent melodies, they hold the listener’s attention without fail.
The somber vocals, set against slabs of grinding riffs and thunderous, pounding drums in “The Plan,” evoke an intense atmosphere, drawing listeners into a desertscape where stars fall, and people exorcise their inner demons with unbridled intensity.
“Sanctuary” channels an energy that’s both raw and emotionally charged. Its solid metal foundation feels as though it’s forged from molten steel, while progressive structures are built atop, creating room for intricate guitar work and a sweeping vision. Alongside the potent vocals, TOC deliver a captivating musical experience.
The Osiris Current’s greatest asset is, unmistakably, their immensely skilled vocalist, though she is far from the album’s only strength. Her impressive voice stands as a powerful focal point, yet the music around her dynamic vocals reinforces the cohesiveness of the entire work, wrapping everything into a potent and unified delivery.
The 11-minute closer, “Around the Bend,” is a slow-burning piece that will keep progressive rock fans engaged throughout. Its transitions alone are a remarkable feat, and the seamless flow between sections showcases One‘s cohesive yet dynamic character.
The Osiris Current feel like a band capable of mastering various musical approaches, and it’s ultimately up to them which path they choose and up to the listener whether it resonates. Personally, I’d love to see them fully explore a diverse soundscape that would make their heavier moments hit even harder, but that’s just my taste. The Osiris Current have accomplished their goal; the album is packed with commanding vocal performances, thrilling guitar solos, fierce riffing, and several ambient passages that add depth.
