With the release of Ascension, Phillip Mann—operating under the moniker Diveradiant—invites listeners into a world crafted through atmospheric soundscapes and introspective themes. Since its inception in 2010, Diveradiant has evolved significantly, but the core vision remains steadfast: to create a realm of self-awareness amidst a harsh, often unforgiving reality.
Mann describes Ascension as a deeply reflective EP that captures the psychological struggles prevalent in modern society. “The main idea is to resonate with the listener, to create a narrative of self-discovery through the lens of contemporary challenges,” he explains. The EP delves into various themes, such as disorientation, loneliness, identity crises, and the pervasive monotony that many experience daily. Through these narratives, Mann encourages listeners to confront their issues and explore the possibility of transformation.
In crafting Ascension, Mann sought to distill the complexity of human emotions into musical form. He emphasizes that each track is not merely an exploration of sound but an experience meant to evoke feelings and thoughts. “The music must be experienced,” he asserts. “It’s about creating a sound that allows listeners to feel something, to reflect on their lives.” This approach is especially significant in today’s fast-paced world, where many often feel disconnected from their surroundings and themselves. By channeling these emotions through his music, Mann aims to foster a sense of connection and understanding.
The sound of Diveradiant has significantly matured over the past fourteen years, transitioning from a primitive setup to a polished production style. Mann recalls his earlier days of recording with limited gear and resources. “When I first started, I had a very basic setup and a different approach to recording,” he reflects. “Over time, I invested in better equipment and honed my production skills, which has allowed my sound to evolve.” Despite this evolution, Mann maintains that his approach to composition remains unconventional, drawing inspiration from the likes of Justin K. Broadrick of Jesu and Godflesh. “The concept of unconventional composing is still my main flavor,” he emphasizes, highlighting the artistic freedom that underpins his creative process.
As an artist immersed in post-metal and ambient music, Mann is drawn to the atmospheric nature of these genres. He notes that the depth of sound is crucial to his creative vision. “I always consider whether the music makes you feel something or experience something,” he explains. “For me, it’s all about the atmosphere.” This preoccupation with sound extends to his compositions, where he seeks to blend heavier and more tranquil elements seamlessly. “The feeling in the moment of creating leads me to blend multiple genres,” he continues. “There are no rules—it’s like a game for me.”
The songwriting process for Diveradiant is both structured and fluid. Mann may enter a session with a clear concept or riff, or he might let improvisation lead the way. “Sometimes, I have a consistent idea of what I want from the song, and then I think about atmospheres,” he reveals. “In other cases, I like to begin with improvisation, and then the first riff is born. From that point, I think of further atmospheres and concepts for the song.” This dynamic approach allows for the integration of various influences, creating a rich tapestry of sound that draws listeners into its depths.
Mann cites a wide range of influences, including Earth, Meshuggah, and SUNN O))), all of which have left an indelible mark on his musical identity. “There are many incredible artists and bands that I can’t even remember all at once,” he admits, noting the myriad of inspirations that shape his sound. However, he is clear about the lasting impact of specific artists on his music. “Justin K. Broadrick is a massive influence, as is his work with Jesu and Godflesh. Their ability to merge heaviness with atmosphere resonates deeply with me,” Mann adds, underscoring the significance of these artists in his creative journey.
Producing his music allows Mann to shape each track from its inception. “The recording process influences the final sound significantly. It clarifies and brightens my ideas as they develop,” he explains. He often finds himself working on multiple tracks simultaneously, a testament to his creative flow and willingness to explore different sonic avenues. “Sometimes, I start two songs at once after finishing the previous one. It might seem strange, but it works for me,” he shares with a hint of pride.
Despite being based in Belgrade—a city not typically associated with post-metal or experimental music—Mann’s experiences within the local scene have shaped his artistry. He acknowledges the challenges of operating in a genre that remains marginalized in Serbia. “The Belgrade alternative scene is struggling, but there are talented people who deserve recognition,” he asserts. “However, it’s challenging to make this kind of music here.” Mann’s determination to pursue his artistic vision in such a context speaks volumes about his commitment to Diveradiant and the music he creates.
As a one-man band, the prospect of bringing Diveradiant‘s music to life in a live setting remains contingent on audience demand. Mann expresses openness to exploring this avenue, should interest arise. “If the audience wants a live experience from this project, I would be glad to consider that opportunity,” he says, contemplating the idea of performing in front of a crowd. Until then, his focus remains on crafting new material. “I’m considering a split album with other musicians and am always in a good place to create new experimental music,” he shares, revealing his eagerness to collaborate and push the boundaries of his sound.
In discussing his creative process, Mann reveals that he often finds inspiration in unexpected moments. “There is no specific mood needed for inspiration; it simply happens. Sometimes, in the middle of the working day, an idea will come to me, and I’ll write it down or record it immediately,” he explains. This spontaneity underscores the organic nature of his creativity, allowing him to capture the essence of his thoughts in real-time. Moreover, Mann believes that his environment plays a significant role in shaping his soundscapes. “The environment has a lot of influence; I see it as infinite inspiration,” he states, emphasizing the interconnectedness of his surroundings and his music.
Phillip Mann‘s work under the Diveradiant banner showcases a unique blend of personal exploration and bold artistic experimentation. With Ascension, he presents an atmospheric journey that encourages listeners to confront their own emotional landscapes, guided by the dense, textured layers of his music. The EP not only captures Mann’s internal battles but also reflects the larger, often unsettling issues that permeate modern life. As Mann continues to push creative boundaries, the path ahead for Diveradiant seems ripe with potential for further sonic experimentation and meaningful collaborations.
