We have previously written about top 20 singers, guitarists, bass players and keyboard players in progressive metal and its related subgenres, but with this post we want to highlight some of the greatest songwriters in the genre. It has to be underlined that most of these names wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for their bandmates and/or musicians they collaborated with.

Top 20 Songwriters in Progressive Metal

Paul Waggoner (Between the Buried and Me)

Between the Buried and Me is definitely one of those bands where creative chemistry between the band members absolutely breaks all possible scales. Guitarist Paul Waggoner is a lucky dude to be surrounded with great instrumentalists such Dan Briggs, Blake Richardson, Tommy Rogers and Dusty Waring, and in the eight releases the band put out to date Waggoner crafted some quite awesome guitar work, placing their music on a whole new level creatively.

Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon)

Mr. Lucassen needs no any introductions. Over the course of time he succeeded in gathering some of the greatest names in the world of metal and beyond, and have them working with him.

Michael Romeo (Symphony X)

We all know that Michael Romeo is a great guitarist, but what Prog Sphere appreciate at the most about this virtuoso is not his technique, but his craftsmanship that brought forward likes such The Damnation Game, The Divine Wings of Tragedy, V: The New Mythology Suite and The Odyssey. So, that’s where Michael Romeo is.

John Petrucci (Dream Theater)

Dream Theater is another band where the cohesion between the band members is crucial for the final product. In their, almost thirty years long history, guitarist John Petrucci shaped the sound by adding his astonishing guitar work.

Einar Solberg / Tor Oddmund Suhrke (Leprous)

Norwegian progressive metal act Leprous are one of the hottest names in the scene currently. After releasing four studio albums and touring both independently and as Ihsahn‘s live band, these guys are slightly one of the bands to count on for the future of the genre. The creative core of the band is based around the vocalist and keyboardist Einar Solberg and guitarist Tor Oddmund Suhrke. Therefore, in this case, we are forced to make an exception.

Odyssey is a masterpiece. What I like most about it is combination of orchestral parts with heavy riffs of Michael Romeo. I think that this is unique.

Right, no Jim Matheos… Oh, well, to each his own, but for me Matheos is certainly one of the most influential prog songwriters of all time and one of the top 5. Or did I miss it somewhere?
