Top 20 Guitarists in Progressive Metal & Around
Prev1 of 4Next

It’s usually a guitar player who makes the difference. Have a greatest possible rhythm section and a bad guitarist, and you’re off. Luckily progressive metal has shaped many great bands that include great guitarists with awesome rhythm sections.

Prog Sphere made a selection of 20 progressive metal guitarists (and technical, as well) that we think possess great skills and provide outstanding performances. This list is focused on both established musicians and axemen whose talent hints great achievements.

Who did we forget? Leave a comment.

Sorry but… Fredrik Thordendal can be delete from this list. This song is mostly the intro over 3 minutes and the lead guitar could play a kid whit no guitar skills.
But maybe its hard to play without fall asleep.

I would say you left out Mikael Akerfeldt, the guys from Extol and Leprous, Cloudkicker, Tesseract, Jeff Loomis, and Arjen Lucassen from the likes of Ayreon, etc.

I feel that you chose the wrong Guitarist for Elitist. Sean Hall was the reason Caves/Earth were so great, and his solo work is fantastic.

While Julian (a great guitarist) has let the band go back into obscurity.

being a guitarist n a big prog metal fan, i rly cant agree to this list. maybe im just misinterpreting the word “top”. it should say “most talented”, if u got rid of the older guitarists. it is also very focused on djent, n lacks the presence of many great guitarists inside the prog metal-label as a whole.

Okay, uh, Josh Middleton of Sylosis is not only their lead guitarist (who plays rather complex and fast songs) but also their vocalist as well.

So I’m kind of wondering how he’s not up here.
