Three years after the first edition of the Generation Prog festival, the Nürnberg, Germany based event returns on November 15th at the MUZclub. The full line-up has already been announced and it features returners: Haken, Exivious and Relocator, along with Kristoffer Gildenlöw and Beyond the Bridge.
Haken released their third, critically acclaimed album The Mountain in September 2013 and it was previously announced that they will be recording an EP this summer. Dutch instrumentalists Exivious released their sophomore album Liminal in November last year via Season of Mist. German fusion metal act Relocator are celebrating the tenth anniversary this year and they are preparing a special set for the festival, including guest appearances from Arno Menses (Subsignal) on vocals, P.V. Bhaskar on Mridangam, Bartek Strycharski on electric violin, and they will be joined by Meinte Boersma on electric violin and guitar.
Kristoffer Gildenlöw released a solo album titled Rust on vinyl in 2012, which was re-released in 2013 on a CD with bonus tracks. German progressive metallers Beyond the Bridge released their debut album The Old Man and the Spirit in 2012 on Frontiers Records and they are currently working on new material.
Michael Schetter, the festival’s director and bassist for Relocator, said following about the upcoming festival:
“This year’s festival is our fifth live event and it continues the tradition of featuring young bands playing a distinctly modern type of prog.
“While we have featured local bands repeatedly over the years, this year marks the first time that artists from abroad are invited back to Nürnberg. Haken have released two fantastic albums since their last visit in 2011 and they will have a new EP available in time for the 2014 festival, so there is lots of new stuff for them to play for our audience.
“Exivious were one of the best-received bands of the 2011 edition of the festival. Since then they have found a stable live lineup with the addition of Yuma van Eekelen on drums and released their second album Liminal. Seeing how their 2011 set was my personal highlight of that festival, I am greatly looking forward to their return to Nürnberg.
“Kristoffer Gildenlöw has long been one of my favorite bassists in prog and his solo debut Rust, while very different from the classic Pain of Salvation material, really impressed me with its atmosphere and songwriting. His band’s set will provide a welcome breather after the all-instrumental fusion metal onslaught of Exivious.
“Beyond the Bridge‘s debut album The Old Man and the Spirit was one of the few albums in a more traditional progressive metal style that really made me listen up in recent years. While the Dream Theater influence is hard to deny, I was really impressed with their songwriting that mixes accessability with playful arrangements. I think the audience is going to enjoy their set a lot!“
Talking about Relocator’s special set marking the tenth anniversary of the band, Schetter says:
“I am of course greatly looking forward to the special 10th Anniversary set by my own band Relocator. We are preparing something really special for the occasion: Aside from some of our own material, we will also play some great prog classics – with vocals! I am very happy that Arno Menses from Subsignal has agreed to sing with us that evening, as he’s a fantastic vocalist. And that’s exactly the level that the songs we’ve chosen call for – unless you want to embarrass yourself… It’s gonna be a lot of fun!“
It is said that the information about tickets will be announced soon.
