TOR MARROCK: Drink, Descend and Deliver
Paul Joseph Cynlais Davies of Tor Marrock speaks for Prog Sphere what it took to come up with the band’s latest studio album ‘The Concept of Self.’
Define the mission of Tor Marrock.
To create metal music.
Tell me about the creative process that informed your new album “The Concept of Self” and the themes it captures.
Lots of alcohol, lots of solitary time in the cellar and letting the theme and style of the album develop by itself in this instance. It turned into a theme of ritual, sensual and sexual witchcraft and cult.
What is the message you are trying to give with “The Concept of Self”?
I guess the underlying message is find your own way.
How did you document the music while it was being formulated?
I didn’t I am not very organised. Apart from the lyrics I didn’t write anything down or video tape anything and as I do the recording myself in the cellar I didn’t back any files up which was a big mistake as my hard drive broke down and all files have been lost. Luckily it was after I had sent the finished tracks to Black Vulture Records.
Is the dynamic flow of the pieces carefully architected?
I would say not. I let it happen naturally.
Describe the approach to recording the album.
It was the same as the first two albums and it will be the same for the fourth: drink, descend and deliver.
How long “The Concept of Self” was in the making?
It took 5 years. Maybe I should not drink so much.
Which bands or artists influenced your work on the release?
I couldn’t really pinpoint any bands in my subconsciousness. I guess it always goes back to the ’80s metal I grew up with.
What is your view on technology in music?
It’s great.
Do you see your music as serving a purpose beyond music?
Yes I do, and I think most metal music does. It proves that you don’t have to conform.
What are your plans for the future?
To play a few selected live shows to support the album this year, and then in 2020 I start writing the final Tor Marrock album.
