Q&A with Austrian Post-Rock Trio RHINA

Rhina

Following the participation on the Progotronics 38 compilation, Austrian post-rock trio Rhina answered our questionnaire about their mission, the most recent release, technology, and more.

Define the mission of Rhina.

There’s not really a mission. Just a bunch of guys who like to make instrumental music.

Tell me about the creative process that informed your most recent EP “Delta”.

The ideas came by themselves. When a hypnotic riff came up, we tried to put it in an arrangement by mostly jamming around to see if it works out, trying different sounds and grooves.

Although it’s an instrumental release, is there a message you try to convey with “Delta”?

As we give riffs time and space to grow, everyone should have enough time to realize their ideas.

Rhina - Delta

How did you document the music while it was being formulated?

We record arrangements live at rehearsals and work the files out at home.

Is the dynamic flow of the pieces carefully architected?

Not everything. If it feels right to repeat a riff more often, we do that.

Describe the approach to recording the EP.

No time – all live. Except for some loops. We had to be fast.

How long “Delta” was in the making?

Just 2 days for recording and approx. 4 days for mixdown and a very very fast mastering :)

Which bands or artists influenced your work on the album?

This Will Destroy You, Maserati, Russian Circles, Red Sparowes, Long Distance Calling, Mono and so on,…

What is your view on technology in music?

We are a classic band. We like to meet and make our music in the practice room. We like tube amps and analogue stuff… There is no computer in our practice room :)

Do you see your music as serving a purpose beyond music?

At this point all we can hope for is, that people overthink bad ideas, listen to our music and change their mood hopefully in a positive way.

What are your plans for the future?

Carry on making music and hopefully go with the flow.
