MELIORIST: Unique Voice

Meliorist is a progressive metalcore six-piece from Brisbane in Australia willing to do something different with a genre that has been stuck for a while. Back in December the band launched their sophomore EP release titled ii., and in an interview below guitarist Andrew Apte tells us about it.

Define the mission of Meliorist.

Ultimately to push the genre in a different direction and to find a unique voice that people appreciate and enjoy.

Tell me about the creative process that informed your second EP titled ii. and the themes it captures.

It’s just a process of listening and asking myself “what do I want hear?” whilst attempting to separate technical knowledge from that question. It covers a wide range musically and lyrically and is ultimately us trying to figure ourselves out.

Meliorist - ii

What is the message you are trying to give with ii.?

We didn’t really have a clear message with this EP. Being that it is an EP and self produced, it was really about seeing what some of these ideas would sound like when we crossed the finish line with them.

How did you document the music while it was being formulated?

I had my ideas sketched out into software on the computer so that I could easily remember and play back the songs. Then when we recorded them it became more sophisticated and final decisions were made.

Is the dynamic flow of the pieces carefully architected?

Definitley, it is far from just copy and pasting things together, or even writing random things in the same key and putting them together. The melodies are constantly referencing and developing themselves and I’m always concious of the chord progression in regards to the song as a whole.

Describe the approach to recording the album.

The album was recorded entirely in my bedroom “studio.” [laughs] We then sent the files off for mixing and mastering with Brian Hood of 456 Recordings.

How long ii. was in the making?

About a year, there were ideas here and there, we were just starting as a band before this so we didn’t really have time to think about recording properly, we had other fundamental priorities to sort out.

Which bands or artists influenced your work on the release?

It’s a hard question to answer because I am influenced by all music now days. I have been writing metal music for a long time so it’s easy for me to hear how melodies and concepts would work within the context of the metal we are writing.

What is your view on technology in music?

I think it’s fantastic, more sounds to play with!

Do you see your music as serving a purpose beyond music?

I can see how music can do that, and perhaps our music could, but our intention is just to make great music.

What are your plans for the future?

We’re working on new stuff at the moment!
