Eidetic Seeing – Eidetic Seeing

How about some heavy psyche hailing from Brooklyn? Yes, this shit is heavy jam rock. Let’s say, put in a blender Naam and Tia Carrera, emphasize its heaviness and you’ll get closer to understand what is the trio about. This is the band’s debut EP, comprised of 5 tracks. The last, fifth track is not included here, and although there is a whole full-length released after this EP, I’ve decided to go with this one, simply as I didn’t have a chance to listen to the album and other than that, this EP is that good that it surpasses the borders of reality.

Acid space heavy psyche with balls, worth checking out.

Butcher in the Fog – Butcher in the Fog EP

When a band names band scrabble nights, band spelling bees, band cupcake bake-offs, band outings to the aquarium as their interests, you realize you get some pretty serious player. (sic)

London’s Butcher in the Fog works as a trio comprised of Yanni Georgiou on guitars/vocals, Emmy Porter on bass and Alex de la Cour on drums. The release in question is the band’s second EP release so far (after Bonafide Studio EP), but the latest update says that they are about to release a full-length later this Fall. Musically, these dudes and the dudette strive to somewhat heterogeneous mixtures of variety of genres including punk (crust), metal, stoner rock, grunge… Energetic, in short.

The blinking moments of heavy psychedelia wrapped up with everything previously mentioned sound promising, thus the band’s upcoming full-length will certainly be an interesting listen. Try out!

Desert Sleep – Desert Sleep

What a find! Been listening to this release of the Lexington, Kentucky based improvisational space ambient jazz progressive trio A LOT last days and it only grew on me by every listen. This is an absolute must-hear for everyone who recognized anything worth listening in the aforementioned categorization.

Desert Sleep is three multi instrumentalists that bonded together with the goal of creating beautiful, groundbreaking, limitless art straight from the soul. The core of desert sleep is the human spirit, and all the warm imperfect spontaneity it carries.

We aim to capture the beauty of the american southwest with our music and we hope that you will embark on this journey with us.

The Firstborn – Lions Among Men

A sonic voyage of abandonment and detachment from the material world. Dense, introspective, ritualistic and hypnotic at times, «Lions Among Men» is challenging music for the thoughtful, attentive listener. That pretty much sums up the third full-length release of Lisbon based metallers The Firstborn.

Being extreme and meditative in the same time, Lions Among Men is in an attempt to unify two quite contradictory elements, one could say. But they do it, this album is lurking in the shadows, supposed to thwart the plans to many of the similar genre orientation. And gotta say, that sitar sounds freaking amazing!

Herba d’Hamelí – Girafes a Sibèria & Amoeba Split – Dance of the Goodbyes

Today we bring you two albums you might want to check out. The bands have a lot of in common, musically and geographically, but these are not the reasons why I brought them up.

Herba d’Hameli is coming from Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Their music relies on Canterbury prog rock, but certainly less jazzy than their fellow countrymen Planeta Imaginario. The album in question, called Girafes a Sibèria was released in 2011 and it’s a real shame how did it pass unnoticed by me. Been listening to it A LOT last days and by every listen it gets more and more ripen.

These Barcelonians list Jethro Tull, Camel, King Crimson and another Spanish like, Iceberg as their main influences. Though, there are no prog rock bands that mention (almost) the same references, Herba d’Hameli comes as a refreshing act. The band is active since 2001 (another reason to blush) and if I found it right, Girafes a Sibèria is their fourth album.

It’s nice to see that Rock Progresivo Español is doing very well. Along with Herba d’Hamelí and aforementioned Planeta Imaginario, there is yet another band from Spain which debut album came as a big surprise for me. The band’s name is Amoeba Split and they are from A Coruña. I was approached by the band’s bassist/guitarist Alberto Villaroya, who introduced me to their work through their only release out to date Dance of the Goodbyes.

This album is structurally much more into the Canterbury style progressive rock, with plenty of jazz and classical elements. It is comprised of six tracks, with three of them clocking over 10 minutes and was nominated by Italian website Progawards as “Best debut album of 2010″. I am glad that someone noticed these folks and deservedly gave any such award.

This record is spluttering of so many great moments and it has to be mentioned that the album feature a female singer (singing in English unlike Herba d’Hamelí which lyrics are in Spanish and have to say that they fit very good) María Toro, who also handles the flutes on the album.

In the years when progressive rock is experiencing many changes in its shape, Herba d’Hamelí and Amoeba Split with few others, are not reinventing the wheels, but rather making it clear that some traditions have to be respected. Respect!

The Vespertines – One Last Time Around the Equator

It’s the fact that our forum is becoming a pretty reliable source for everyone who is interested to discover new bands and free from every limitations, you can certainly find something that will get your attention.

This morning I got myself introduced to an interesting act coming from Long Beach, California. The band is called The Vespertines and the music they create is adorned by the term “laid-back”. Indeed, their laid back blues wrapped up by laid back classic rock and laid-back psychedelia is fascinating on a 10-track selection of songs called One Last Time Around the Equator.

Although everything in the mix is of equal quality, albeit Vanessa Acosta is the particular segment which makes this piece that effective. While the rest of the team, comprised of Kyle Cavaness on bass, Hutch on guitar and Chet on drums are having the leaves into the improvisation, Vanessa is holding the pace by playing on her attractive voice.

Their tendency to go from a heavy psychedelia to jazz and funk to classic rock never comes by force, this album is spontaneous from its opener Trigger down to Triectoid.

The Mercury Tree – Pterodactyls

Portland, Oregon’s experimental progressive rock trio known as The Mercury Tree has been active since 2004, first as an one-man band based around a guitarist, singer and keayboarsist Ben Spees. Two years later TMT becomes a full band, adding Mike Byrne on drums, James Crutcher on bass, and Avery Cooper on guitar. In this line-up, the Portlanders released a self-titled album in 2007.

Since then, with different line-ups the band released two EPs, Eerie in 2007 and Descent in 2010. Pterodactyls is the second full-length released in 2011 and is a concept album loosely based around dinosaurs, employing various different elements ranging from math rock to progressive and psychedelic and more experimental stuff. The band’s current line up is comprised of: Ben Spees – guitar, voice, keyboard; Connor Reilly – drums, backing vocals and Aaron Clark – bass, backing vocals.

Jeff Higgins – Profit Prophet

It’s simple unavoidable not to quote Jeff Higgins who said that Jeff Higgins is the founder of Groove Sandwich. Jeff Higgins, the musician, is the founder of Jeff Higgins, the blogger, who is the founder of Jeff Higgins, the musician.

Profit Prophet is Jeff Higgins’ (the musical one) first album and it is an electroacoustic piece in seven movements that is built off of the notion that global economics is more of a cult than a science. We both celebrate and fear the diety known as The Economy. Some of us experience its blessings while other feel its wrath. Could you have better description of Profit Prophet than it? I doubt.

There are no any odd rhythmic changes and progressive rock improvisational wankery, but to hell with it, it’s Jeff Higgins who is the friend of Nikola Savić, the founder of Prog Sphere and an occasional musician. (Though more a founder, than a musician).  Anyway, to learn more about what is Profit Prophet all about, check the embedded player below and some tags at down.

Ennis Tola – Seed aka “How a band amazed me…”

It’s not  like I am accustomed to put any additional descriptions in a title of a post as I rather love to keep the things simple and straight, but I couldn’t avoid to make an exception here. Let me introduce you an amazing group hailing from Melbourne, Australia. Amazing by all means. Now when you shook hands, let’s see what lies beyond.

Laid-back ambient style in their ever-progressing soundwaves reached through many rhythm-changes and startstops is what builds Seed. Wonderful sounds of Karen Heath’s clarinet mixed with Tomas Fitzgerald’s Jeff Buckley-like voice, in addition of precise, but spontaneous instrumentation place this installment out of time. Eastern flavored sound walls are on a thin line with folksy flirts and even some of post-rock and alternative legacy.

Check the player below and enjoy this amazing journey!

Bitter Resolve – Bows and Arrows Against the Lightning.

I don’t really remember when it happened to have such a good band discoveries in continuity. But who cares for it actually, there is a new band coming from Chapel Hill, North Carolina and their name is Bitter Resolve. Now, the trio comprised of Lauren Fitzpatrick on drums, R. Corey Dial on vocals/guitar and Robert Walsh on vocals/bass loves to describe their rock with the term “free”.

I don’t know what free rock is, but whatever it is, Bitter Resolve’s grooving sounds really good. That grooving would be the same way if Roger Waters & David Gilmour would join forces with Tony Iommi & Co. So hear it. That’s why you have that Bandcamp player embedded below. The band’s Bandcamp profile offers album in two editions. One’s digital download for $6.99 and also you’ve got limited clear-vinyl edition for measly 12 bucks. So if you have 12 bucks, this would be my recommendation for all of you who doesn’t know how and where to spend it.
