The Mercury Tree – Pterodactyls

Portland, Oregon’s experimental progressive rock trio known as The Mercury Tree has been active since 2004, first as an one-man band based around a guitarist, singer and keayboarsist Ben Spees. Two years later TMT becomes a full band, adding Mike Byrne on drums, James Crutcher on bass, and Avery Cooper on guitar. In this line-up, the Portlanders released a self-titled album in 2007.

Since then, with different line-ups the band released two EPs, Eerie in 2007 and Descent in 2010. Pterodactyls is the second full-length released in 2011 and is a concept album loosely based around dinosaurs, employing various different elements ranging from math rock to progressive and psychedelic and more experimental stuff. The band’s current line up is comprised of: Ben Spees – guitar, voice, keyboard; Connor Reilly – drums, backing vocals and Aaron Clark – bass, backing vocals.

I’m fortunate to live in Portland, and have seen The Mercury Tree perform multiple times…they are awesome!

I’m especially looking forward to their upcoming show with “LORD” at Plan B…it’s going to be mind blowing!
